The fourth round of trade talks between Mexico and the United States will take place next week, with officials from both sides expressing eagerness to hammer out a deal before the U.S. midterm elections in November, according to sources interviewed by Reuters. A framework for a deal would benefit both parties.  U.S. President Donald Trump is looking for a win on the economic front (a bilateral deal may bring down consumer prices in the U.S.) as he faces the possibility of losing control of Congress when ballots are cast on Nov. 3. Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that people with personal recreational cannabis authorizations can now make marijuana-infused edibles for their own personal use — but people still cannot legally buy or sell them. The ruling — which applies to gummies, brownies and other homemade edibles laced with cannabis — expands what the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) must allow under an authorization for adult recreational self-consumption. Mexico has a new ally as it decides how classrooms across the country will use artificial intelligence. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has agreed to support the Public Education Ministry (SEP) with technical assistance, teacher training and research into how to responsibly use AI and other new technologies. Education Minister Mario Delgado on Wednesday addressed the low scores earned by Mexican students in the latest international PISA evaluation test by blaming “the excessive use of cell phones and computer screens.” Speaking in Mexico City during the opening of National Days of Traditional Games, Delgado expressed doubt that the results amount to a comprehensive evaluation of the Mexican educational system, though he did concede that the sample was “statistically representative.”  Delgado was blunt about the role that screens play in Mexican 15-year-olds’ poor reading test scores: “Screens make it easy to ‘read’ or consume images, and [therefore] teenagers find it difficult to read more complex and longer texts.” (SEP / Facebook) “The low reading comprehension scores can be explained by the fact that screens make it easy to ‘read’ or consume images, and teenagers find it difficult to read more complex and longer texts,” he said.
