Following the death of a female student, the Education Ministry (SEP) ordered all so-called “military schools” shuttered by Aug. 31. Furthermore, Education Minister Mario Delgado said such schools must immediately reimburse payments made for outstanding educational services, such as re-enrollment fees, school supplies and uniforms. President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Delgado’s decision, while lamenting the 13-year-old girl’s death. “What happened in Tamaulipas is very sad,” she said. “Abuses occurring under the pretext of discipline cannot be allowed.” The SEP resolution comes after the July 16 death of Dafne Zapata, who died during a summer camp at Marina Doenitz Military Academy in the state of Tamaulipas. Her flagship Llave MX platform , run by the new Digital Transformation and Telecoms Agency , aims to unify citizen data for easier access to government services and health records. Central to this effort is República Sana (Healthy Nation) program, which seeks to integrate Mexico’s major public health institutions and advance toward universal healthcare. The Mexican economy grew 1.5% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous three-month period, according to preliminary data, recovering from a 0.6% contraction in the first quarter of the year . The quarter-over-quarter growth rate, reported by the national statistics agency INEGI on Thursday, was the best result for the Mexican economy since the final quarter of 2020. INEGI also reported that Mexico’s economy grew 2.1% annually in the second quarter of 2026, up from a 0.4% year-over-year expansion in the first quarter. Both the quarter-over-quarter and annual growth rates came in above the median forecasts of economists surveyed by Reuters. A weekend train derailment in Sonora resulted in the spillage of approximately 59,000 liters of sodium hydrosulfide, prompting the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to open an investigation.  The sodium hydrosulfide — a corrosive chemical compound used in industrial processes such as copper mining and considered hazardous to health and environment — was spilled after the derailment of several tank cars of a freight train belonging to Ferromex, a subsidiary of Grupo México. The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) — an arm of the World Bank — issued a mixed ruling in the arbitration process initiated against Mexico by U.S.-based Vulcan Materials Company. In what is being framed as a favorable ruling for Mexico, the ICSID dismissed almost all of the company’s claims, except for one measure related to the expropriation of a property operated by a Vulcan subsidiary . Vulcan had already filed a trade-related complaint against Mexico when, during the López Obrador administration, its subsidiary’s work area was designated a nature reserve. The dispute is only now being resolved. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that power outages fell 39% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2024, attributed to a “historic investment” in the expansion and modernization of the country’s transmission and distribution networks. Mexico’s export revenue increased 24.6% annually in the first six months of 2026 to reach a record high of US $389.72 billion, according to the national statistics agency INEGI. Participation in the workforce declined by nearly 300,000 during the first half of 2026 as June employment figures were the second-worst of the year, according to the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) carried out by the national statistics agency INEGI. ENOE data indicates that 319,633 jobs were lost last month and said the decline was linked to a contraction in both formal and informal employment, although more pronounced in the latter.  A graphic released by the think tank México ¿cómo vamos? with data from IMSS shows the state-by-state job generation performance for the second quarter of 2026 (April, May and the low-performance month of June). Hurricane Genevieve briefly reached Category 5 in the early hours of Monday, becoming the first cyclone of this magnitude recorded in the eastern Pacific since Hurricane Kristy in 2024, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported. As of 9 a.m. CST on Monday, the NHC said Genevieve was located approximately 855 kilometers south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California Sur, with maximum sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour and wind gusts up to 305 kilometers per hour. In two separate incidents on Saturday night, a tank car on a freight train derailed, prompting the mobilization of emergency services while specialized personnel carried out containment efforts. Authorities declared a Code Red in the northern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, after a Pemex-owned tank car carrying 70,000 liters of gasoline tipped over when a freight train derailed.  The incident, which occurred in the Kansas City Southern rail yard in Ciudad Madero, triggered hazardous materials response protocols.  Municipal, state and federal authorities cordoned off the perimeter and established a command post. Specialized personnel quickly evaluated the scene to consider the possibility of leaks, fire hazards and explosion risks.
