Sheinbaum: Tamaulipas immigration agents caught on camera demanding bribes have been fired

Image
Two immigration agents were fired earlier this week after being filmed allegedly extorting returning migrants at the Matamoros, Tamaulipas, border crossing in northeastern Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the dismissal of the agents after a video circulating on social media appeared to show they were soliciting money from migrants entering Mexico from the United States. “We immediately asked the Interior Ministry and the director of the National Migration Institute to review the case,” Sheinbaum said, adding that the suspects were immediately suspended and an investigation had begun. After becoming aware of the incriminating videos, President Sheinbaum announced the dismissal of the two immigration agents implicated and promised a new protocol for filing corruption complaints. Mexico’s year in review: The 10 biggest news and politics stories of 2025

Image
We are approaching the end of another big year of news in Mexico. It was a year of significant change, as Donald Trump’s return to the White House had a considerable impact on Mexico, while the Mexican judiciary was overhauled via the country’s first-ever judicial elections. It was a year of major floods and record rain, a year with fewer homicides but still obstinate insecurity, a year in which cartel honchos were sent abroad and an outspoken anti-crime mayor was killed at home. President Claudia Sheinbaum completed her first year in office in 2025 , a year that came with no shortage of challenges for Mexico’s first woman leader. This year marks the seventh year of national governance by the “fourth transformation” (4T) political movement , which was founded by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who held office for the Morena party between 2018 and 2024. As we did at the end of 2023 and 2024 , Mexico News Daily looked back at the past 12 months and selected 10 news an...

Mexico has sent two ships carrying 80,000 barrels of petroleum to Cuba to help alleviate the country’s energy crisis over the Christmas period, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Monday.  “We are doing this within a legal framework as a sovereign nation,” Sheibaum said at her Monday morning press conference.  En Cuba nadie está a salvo de los apagones; en los hoteles cubanos también puedes disfrutarlos 🫣 pic.twitter.com/rarxtHgJdy — Javi🇨🇺 (@JaviXCubaLibre) December 7, 2025 Cuba has been experiencing an energy crisis for around three years, with regular power outages of 20 hours or longer in several regions and frequent breakdowns at its aging power plants. The  five total blackouts as well as multiple partial ones in the last years have had a severe knock-on effect on the national economy. Cuba does not have the foreign currency needed to purchase the fuel required for its generating units. In addition, the latest U.S. military pressure on its main oil ...

CFE opens 269-MW combined cycle power plant in Querétaro to boost Bajío grid

President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the Federal Electricity Commission’s (CFE) 269-megawatt combined cycle power plant in San Pedro Escobedo, Querétaro, on Friday, hailing it as a critical addition to the Bajío region’s growing energy demands. The plant, now named the “Josefa Ortiz Téllez Girón” Central — after the independence hero known as “La Corregidora” — is the first CFE facility to bear a woman’s name, part of a broader initiative to recognize women’s contributions to Mexican history. CFE Director General Emilia Calleja Alor said the natural gas-powered plant will supply energy to more than 4 million people while incorporating sustainable technology for efficient and reliable generation. “We have a defined direction in the electricity sector with a Strategic Strengthening Plan where we are all coordinated,” Calleja said at the inauguration ceremony, which was also attended by Energy Minister Luz Elena González Escobar and Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri. Desde la CFE, ...
