The Mexican Navy has rescued 28 minors who were allegedly being transported illegally aboard a vessel without a declared route. There are conflicting reports about Thursday’s incident, which occurred near the port of Topolobampo in the municipality of Ahome in the northern Pacific state of Sinaloa. The Navy released this photo of the minors being interviewed upon disembarking, with their faces blurred due to their age. It was unclear on Friday if they were being trafficked, though it did appear that they were being transported illegally. (Semar) The Sinaloa Prosecutor’s Office reported that the Navy intercepted the ship, adding that the youngsters had been recruited as day laborers from somewhere in southern Mexico. “In a rescue operation carried out by the Naval Ministry, 28 people were assisted — 27 between the ages of 14 and 17 and one 18-year-old — who were on a vessel at sea,” the Sinaloa authorities said, according to the newspaper La Jornada. US Chamber of Commerce takes aim at Mexico’s tax agency ahead of USMCA review

Image
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce (USCC) criticized Mexico’s judicial reform and accused the Mexican tax agency SAT of “aggressive and inconsistent tax enforcement practices” in a lengthy document submitted to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). In response to the USTR’s request for public comments on the USMCA ahead of the 2026 review of the trilateral North American trade pact, the USCC prepared a 39-page document — including a detailed letter — that refers to a wide range of issues and makes a number of recommendations. In a section of the Oct. 28 document entitled “Factors Impacting the Investment Climate in North America,” the USCC states that the U.S. business community “is facing increased uncertainty that affects companies’ ability to make long-term plans and investment.” “As previously stated, in Mexico, the recent judicial reform allowing for the direct election of judges has put at risk the government’s obligations to provide to all the right to a competent,...

At the site of the violations, trees were cleared to make room for avocado plants. (Profepa) Within the ejido property in the municipality of Contepec, Profepa agents detected an avocado orchard comprising roughly 500 avocado plants between 0.80 and 1.80 meters tall and several lime trees on land designated as protected forest land.  Inspectors verified the damage to the oak-pine forest ecosystem in this 2.2-hectare area of the property, identifying 12 oak tree stumps that represent an estimated total volume of 3,616 cubic meters of wood.  In anoth...

The PEA increased by 793,353 people compared to August to reach 62.09 million people. Since Hurricane Alex in 2010, the riverbed has been rewilding , aided by initiati...

3 Mexican financial institutions cease operations after US money laundering claims

Image
The United States government effectively killed off three Mexican financial institutions by accusing them of laundering money for drug cartels and announcing a ban on transactions between them and U.S. banks.  Four months after the U.S. Department of the Treasury made public its accusations against the banks Intercam and CIBanco and the brokerage firm Vector, all three of the financial institutions have ceased to operate in Mexico.   CIBanco signed a deal to sell off its trust division, while Intercam was acquired by Kapital Bank. Community group maps undiscovered monarch migration pathway across Yucatán

The community organization Alas Mayas (Mayan Wings) has detected a new migratory route for the monarch butterfly that crosses the Yucatán Peninsula, reaching Quintana Roo. In collaboration with the researcher Dr. Cristina Dockx, Alas Mayas conducted community monitoring for six years, during which they found that the monarch butterfly not only transits but also breeds in the northeast of the peninsula. This was particularly noteworthy on Isla Mujeres, where monarch butterflies have been observed at all stages of development: egg, larva, chrysalis and adult. During this time, the group recorded more than 300 specimens in San Juan del Río, Yucatán, and nearly 100 in Cacao, Quintana Roo, supporting the hypothesis that this region is part of a new migratory route connecting the United States, Cuba and southeastern Mexico. The group also revealed they successfully tracked a monarch butterfly with a transmitter for the first time in the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.  Unlike the for...
