Claudia versus the cartels: A perspective from our CEO

Image
The issue that most gets our readers’ attention is that of the cartels in Mexico. We consistently hear comments that Mexico will never realize its full potential until it gets the cartels under control. I would agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment. The cumulative drag that corruption, threats, extortion and violence have on the people of Mexico, as well as on economic growth, cannot be underestimated. The roughly 20,000-plus deaths annually in Mexico as a result of the cartels, in addition to the over 80,000 deaths annually from drug overdoses in the U.S. , take a massive toll on families, friends, and communities. I often hear comments from Americans that Claudia Sheinbaum should get out of the way and let the U.S. military handle the cartels. Those who make this argument seem able to easily overlook the troubles that the U.S. military had upon getting involved in other countries such as Colombia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Recent history has shown that one country “helping” another ...

Water commission demolishes illegal dams built by Chihuahua ex-governor

Image
Mexico’s National Water Commission on Thursday began demolishing an illegal dam on a ranch owned by a former Chihuahua governor, releasing water that could be used to help repay the country’s water debt to the U.S. The process to dismantle the unauthorized infrastructure began on Tuesday when the water commission (Conagua) filed a complaint with the Federal Attorney General’s Office over the illegal use of at least 700,000 cubic meters of water. President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the lawsuit, saying water is a national resource and cannot be privately appropriated without government-issued concessions. Conagua’s operation was briefly interrupted when the ex-governor, César Duarte, obtained an injunction against the demolition of the dam. After quickly overturning the court order on appeal, Conagua bulldozed the dam before moving to demolish reservoirs on the El Saucito ranch that held as much as 3 million cubic meters of water, according to reports. The release and recovery o...

US trade court blocks Trump’s ‘fentanyl trafficking’ tariffs against Mexico

Image
Mexico on Wednesday appeared poised to get some relief from U.S. tariffs thanks to a decision by a U.S. federal court that blocked President Donald Trump from using an emergency-powers law to impose duties on imports. However, there is no certainty that the decision will force the Trump administration to withdraw some of its tariffs, as an appeals court agreed on Thursday to allow many of the U.S. president’s sweeping duties to remain in place. The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that Trump exceeded his authority in implementing two rounds of tariffs earlier this year. (Ken Lund CC BY-SA 2.0) The appeal court’s decision came after the United States Court of International Trade ruled on Wednesday that Trump exceeded his authority in using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on imports from most countries around the world. The U.S. president used the IEEPA, a federal law enacted in 1977, to impose his so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on i...
