Por fin! After 13 years, GDL-Puerto Vallarta highway project finishes

The long-awaited Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta highway, which makes it easier and faster to reach the Pacific resort cities of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas by car, is finally fully open — 13 years after work on the 310-kilometer roadway was first approved. An inaugural ceremony on Satuday in Bahía de Banderas led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and members of her cabinet celebrated the opening of the final stretch of the highway — a 33-kilometer segment along the Pacific Coast that extends from Bucerías, Nayarit, to Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. The highway makes travel between the two cities much shorter and provides increased access to Puerto Vallarta’s airport. it is expected to increase domestic tourism in the region. Mexico City will cut its reliance on water from the Cutzamala System by 50%, mayor announces

In an effort to address the problem of severe water shortages in Mexico City, Mayor Clara Brugada announced this week a plan calling for the metropolis of 22.5 million people to halve its reliance on the Cutzamala reservoir system for the next two years. Elected to office on June 2 and sworn in on Oct. 5, Brugada announced the strategy during the inauguration of the city’s first Agua Bienestar purification plant in the Coyoacán borough on Monday. Is Mexico the most democratic country in the world? Sheinbaum says it might be, thanks to judicial reform

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Sunday that Mexico is “perhaps” the most democratic country in the world given that it will hold judicial elections in 2025. Speaking at an event in Tlaxcala , Sheinbaum highlighted that a number of constitutional reforms were approved by Congress in recent months , allowing Mexico to “recover the social sense” and the “patriotic sense of our Constitution.” The visit to Tlaxcala concluded Sheinbaum’s presidential tour of all 32 Mexican states. Mass graves discovered at Mexico’s northern, southern borders

Authorities have discovered 17 bodies in clandestine graves in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico. The Chiapas Attorney General’s Office and the state Security Ministry said Sunday that 15 bodies were found in the municipality of La Concordia in recent days, while two additional bodies were located in Palenque. All 17 bodies belonged to men. The bodies of 15 men were found in clandestine graves in La Concordia, Chiapas. An additional two bodies were uncovered in Palenque, near the border with Campeche. Giraffe reported missing from Culiacán Zoo

The unexplained disappearance of one of the two giraffes at the Culiacán Zoo, in the capital city of Sinaloa , has captivated local residents and sparked a wave of viral memes. The zoo’s new director, José María “Chema” Casanova Rodríguez, confirmed Thursday that when he assumed his role on Nov. 7, the giraffe was already absent. Casanova said determining the animal’s fate falls to his predecessor, Diego García Heredia, who oversaw the zoo during the giraffe’s last recorded presence. The Mexican government announced on Friday that it is working to develop a “panic button” for migrants in the United States who think they might soon be detained by U.S. immigration authorities. New labor reform protects rideshare and other platform gig workers

More than 650,000 Mexicans got a little something extra in their Christmas stockings this year when President Claudia Sheinbaum signed into law labor reforms benefitting gig workers on digital platforms such as Uber, DiDi and Rappi. The new landmark regulations in the Federal Labor Law were published Christmas Eve in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which serves to inform the public and ensure transparency. They take effect June 22, 2025. As 2024 draws to a close, Mexico is expecting freezing nights and warm days thanks to another winter cold front , according to the National Meteorological System (SMN). Weather forecasts predict cold front No. 18 will enter the country from the northwest, followed by polar air moving in from the Pacific towards the Altiplano, or Central Mexican Plateau. We are approaching the end of another year of big news in Mexico. It was a historic year, as Mexicans elected a female president for the first time ever. It was a year of change, as Claudia Sheinbaum took office, Andrés Manuel López Obrador left public life after a long political career and various modifications were made to the Mexican Constitution. And, unfortunately, 2024 was also a violent year in Mexico, as the country’s notorious cartels continued to fight each other — and in the case of the Sinaloa Cartel, itself. Of course plenty of other adjectives and nouns could be used to describe 2024 in Mexico: A year of hope. An uncertain year. A record-breaking year . A year of extreme weather.
