Mexico designates nearly US $8B for massive expansion of passenger train network

On the campaign trail, Claudia Sheinbaum promised that the return of passenger trains would be a fundamental objective of her administration. Now the Mexican president is putting her words into action. On Thursday, Sheinbaum announced that the government has set aside 157 billion pesos (US $7.8 billion) in its 2025 budget to begin installing 3,000 kilometers of track connecting Mexico City with northern regions. Authorities seize over 200,000 counterfeit Chinese products in Mexico City

As Mexico faces pressure from Donald Trump and others over its trade relationship with China and Chinese investment in various sectors of the Mexican economy, federal and Mexico City authorities raided a Chinese goods megastore on Thursday, seizing more than 200,000 counterfeit products. The Economy Ministry (SE) and the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) led the operation targeting Mexico Mart, a 16-story Chinese-operated macroplaza (large wholesale shopping complex) in the historic center of Mexico City. US suspends Mexican cattle imports after flesh-eating worm detected in Chiapas

The United States has temporarily paused imports of Mexican cattle after a case of New World screwworm was identified at the lakeside town of Catazajá in the southern state of Chiapas, the Mexican government said on Sunday. “The United States and Mexico are working on implementing measures to resume the normal flow of Mexican exports,” it said in a statement, adding that the temporary suspension was only of Mexico’s cattle and did not apply to other exports. At overflowing Veracruz landfill, Greenpeace Mexico demands anti-plastic laws

Activists from Greenpeace Mexico and other organizations demonstrated Sunday at a sprawling, open-air garbage dump in the state of Veracruz, denouncing the country’s growing plastic waste crisis and calling for urgent action. The protesters — some dressed in hazardous material suits and holding a huge banner reading “Anti-Plastic Law Now!” — temporarily blocked operations at the Villa Allende landfill in Coatzacoalcos, a major port city in southern Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. Coatzacoalcos, population 212,000, is an important maritime port on the Gulf of Mexico. Exotic wildlife found on a México state property linked to Sinaloa Cartel

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) announced it is filing a criminal complaint after 36 exotic animals — including eight lion cubs,  six Bengal tigers and an American bison — were found at a private residence in the state of México. According to a press release issued Monday, inspectors from Profepa and the Edomex Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) went to the site over the weekend to find out if the animals were being kept legally and to review their condition. A kinkajou — a tropical rainforest mammal related to raccoons and native to Central and South America — that was found on the property. (Profepa) The property is located in San Pedro Cholula in the municipality of Ocoyoacac, about 20 kilometers from central Toluca. It is reportedly adjacent to a pallet business. Mexico’s governors sign Sheinbaum pact to improve water use by industry

President Claudia Sheinbaum and Mexico’s 32 governors signed a National Human Right to Water Agreement on Monday, a pact that aims to ensure equal access to water for Mexico’s public while also increasing agricultural and industrial efficiency and sustainability. The private sector joined as a voluntary participant, committing to cede contractual rights to at least 126 million cubic meters of water and promising to invest 21 billion pesos (more than US $1 billion) in infrastructure and technology improvements. As part of an annual tradition, 39 kilometers of poinsettias were planted across Mexico City on Nov. 22, marking the start of the festive season. More than 18,000 people expressed interest in standing as candidates in Mexico’s first ever judicial elections in 2025, the federal government announced Monday.
